Rep. Bucshon Condemns the Biden Admin’s EV Mandate, Taking Away Consumer Choice and Dictating the Vehicles Americans can Drive

WASHINGTON – Today, the Biden Administration finalized unprecedented new tailpipe emission rules, requiring over 67% of vehicles sold after model year 2032 to be electric vehicles (EVs) or plug-in hybrids. This move marks the strictest federal climate regulation ever issued for passenger cars and trucks, overhauling the American auto industry by effectively banning gas-powered vehicles. U.S. Representative Larry Bucshon, M.D. (R-IN-08) released the following statement condemning this radical EPA rule:

“President Biden and his administration continue to prioritize election year politics over pragmatism, appeasing radical environmental groups instead of supporting the ability of the American people to choose the vehicle that is right for their circumstances,” said Dr. Bucshon. “This flawed rush-to-green mandate will limit consumer choice, destroy American auto-manufacturing jobs, drive up costs, and embolden China, who controls the vast majority of critical minerals needed to build batteries for EVs. From the de facto ban on American LNG gas exports, to trying to take away gas stoves, to now dictating the vehicles Hoosiers and all Americans can drive, this is yet another example of the Biden Administration using climate change as a political tool to strengthen Washington Democrats’ control of the economy. Thankfully, House Republicans have a different vision that focuses on unleashing American energy to deliver affordable, reliable energy, support consumer choice, and bolster the U.S. auto-manufacturing industry.”

BACKGROUND

Dr. Bucshon has remained a strong advocate for an energy agenda that promotes economic growth, affordability and reliability for consumers, and bolsters U.S. energy security. Dr. Bucshon has continually rejected the Biden administration’s rush-to-green agenda, emphasizing that our nation’s energy policy doesn’t have to be a zero-sum game and that’s why we need an all-of-the-above approach to support growth while limiting government overreach.

Last September, Dr. Bucshon joined his colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives in voting to pass the Preserving Choice in Vehicle Purchasing Act (H.R. 1435). This vote was a rejection of the Biden administration’s effort to ban the sale of new combustion engines. H.R. 1435, which Dr. Bucshon is a cosponsor of,  protects America’s automotive future and defend the American people’s ability to choose the affordable vehicles that best suits their needs.

Congressman Larry Bucshon, M.D. represents Indiana’s 8th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives and is a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.
